This gets at a question I have pondered over the years — can we work out a cycle of third party support and correlate it to… Anything? And I would try to take the graph back into the nineteenth century. The cycle is rough and either rough but there or so rough as to be meaningless.

There does appear an be and flow of high and low support — the logic dictates a sense that the third party burned the voting groups who turned to the third party, and so are now unwilling to try again. The parties act as they do to retain their control, so a few cycles down the road — we try again.

Third-Party Peaks: 2016, 1992, 1980, 1968, 1948, 1932, 1924 Third-Party Nadirs: (2020?), 2004, 1984, 1972, 1964, 1940, 1928

1992 – 2000 gives a good, if dwindling, bunched pile — perhaps the end of the cold war lead to more pronounced discontents, the figures of Perot and Nader and Buchanan serving the need for personalities to channel them. Hard to figure if the clump that accrues from a Libertarian Party that seems to have established a percentage benchmark and the personality of Jill Stein come off as an echo of that 92-00 cycle, or are new phenomena.

And I guess an electorate that may go with a third party got what they needed in 1964 with the landslides loser candidates of Goldwater and McGovern — no need for segregationist or at he conservative figure on one side and we have a Vietnam war protest vote for the other.

Much of it is just ballot access. I gather everyone was effectively shut out in 1952 – 1964. After all, the high number for 1948 is buttressed considerably by Dixie state ballot maneuvers — Thurmond was the Democratic candidate in a few states, with Truman not on it. If not for that, we are just staring at Henry Wallace’s two and a half percent.

But apparently in “Where are they now” category the story did not end there. Sometime after, the singer went on to found a youth sports video company, from which he formed personal relationships with under aged athletes, and so ended up arrested on charges of sexual abuse of minors.

A sign of the fleeting-ness of this type of fame, the news articles on his arrest do not mention that he was a big viral sensation. And that lyric analyzer is not updated, getting left behind in the aftershocks of the Great Recession. But, at any rate, anyone doing a “where are they now”, you now know, and if you are arranging A big kooky project full of past viral all-stars, you can cross him off your list.

I can recognize the political / voting pattern — Louisiana and North Carolina and Kansas conspicuously not colored, but also conspicuously with Democratic governors.

I don’t see how any of the other candidates come out ahead for their efforts — unless, I guess San Diego’s Republican mayor or the young dude with a real estate YouTube show actually slides in to first.

That being said, Cruz Bustamante is right in or offering the major difference in recall elections and just why Newsom is in better shape than Gray Davis and just why he can not be blamed for Davis’s loss even as he was taken in as a cautionary tale on tactics: for Bustamante taking back-up for Davis, “hard to blame me with Davis’s approval rating in the high twenties / low thirties.”. The dilemma with the premise of the recall as an electoral tool — and what if the rating is merely in the forties?

The Twitter feed for Newsom gets comical. We meet the the Democratic Party heavy-weights, or supposed “influencers” for parts of the constituency. A tweet directing to a tweet by “AOC”. ” California’s own Kampala Harris”. “Listen to Barack Obama”. And Klobuchar and Warren. I gather he is playing with fire, or getting such on behalf of the Democratic Party if not himself, by tossing A link to a Hill article with the quote —

“Women are smarter in politics, smarter in civics, they’re smarter in economics. Women rule.”

— Say what you must on “fragile masculinity”, but it does offer a goodoff-ramp for men voting for you, while some feminist women’s study language will dismiss it with a rem that boils down to ” patronizing”.

We do see a first blush of a quick saver for the Democrats, and we can see this as what they will look to in 2022, is Texas’s abortion bill, where we find a retest from Robert Reich that “Needless to say, if Republicans take power, it would have devastating consequences for California and beyond. Staring at tthe candidates, skipping past the two major parties — even as you look amused at the Democrats — such as they are —

James Hanink, of the American Solidarity Party. “No party preference” it says, even as he offers his party. One definition of “Trump’s without Trump”, vigorously opposed to him even as they voted for him. A fifth party worth keeping on a sideways glance.

Dennis Richter — “Defender of Cuban Revolution and opposed to Washington’s six-decade long economic embargo. Oppose wokeism and and cancel culture. For unconditional right of Israel to exist as a Jewish State”. Or, to put another spin on it — getting kicked out of any Communist gets together for apostasy past ” defending Cuban Revolution”.

II. Ed Asner — enemy to friend

In other celebrity tidbits — the passing on of Ed Asher sparks a tweet from Daniel Burke, A tribute to a celebrity who walked in and around the Larouche organization a couple of times — just enough for the movements to be at the ready to lob a memorial where these few tidbits of off-kilter doings become a focus of his career. Harley Schlanger, representing LORG, editorialized against Tony Blair and the British Parliament’s withering criticism on Biden for his withdrawal from Afghanistan as representing an attack on “the Presidential System” — placing them above domestic neoconservatives due to their Britishness–, moving LORG into a posture of support for the Biden Administration. (Similar to the interim before Obama took office, supporting a “Presidential system” and suggesting “advisors in talk”). Interestingly, this defense moves on to former Governor Cuomo and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Compare that to LPAC, who continues to back the recall… Tech / Malthusian Complex or thereabouts would be defeated, asking “Will the California Recall Election be the Turning Point for our Republic?”

V. Memories

One time I was being solicited aggressively by a LaRouche (I think) political canvasser and I stuck out my arm like a running back warding off a tackle and yelled “Personal space! PERSONAL SPACE!!!” at him. It’s all you can do.

I asked him why he was tabling for LaRouche in Munich, Germany in 2003 & he asked me what the hell am I doing to change the world, which, fair enough, but I still can’t fathom what he was trying to accomplish. It spells real trouble to have a point of view like that. I had a guy walk up to me at the polls years ago talking all about socialism and human rights blah blah and ended up asking me for my support of Lyndon Larouche. I said don’t you ever try that on me again.

I’m digressing here, but the Space Laser thing reminds me of back in the ’80s. In Houston’s Hobby Airport, I was accosted by Lyndon LaRouche supporters wanting me to sign a petition to use Reagan’s “Star Wars” program to zap Jane Fonda with gamma rays from space.

The first “Free thinker” I met in college, decades ago, called himself that because he was a Holocaust denier and Lyndon LaRouche supporter. Subsequent encounters with those who describe themselves that way have done nothing to assuage my initial revulsion.

When I first came to the US in 1992 a group of Lyndon Larouche supporters harangued me on issues of global politics. Interesting characters.

Every time I see this I have flashbacks to the LaRouchies running around Chicago in their rusted out GMC truck, shouting catchphrases through the speaker they stuck on the roof. Same vibe.

Stuck in traffic on the turnpike while my dad tells me all about how LaRouche was a fave figure amongst the late 80s Romanian recent arrivals (for all the worst reasons.)

Learning the source of stray “Newton was afraid put up by British”comments. they tried to recruit me at the DFL convention in Rochester Mn in the late 00’s. i was like, your whole thing is built around one guy. they assured me “LaRouche Youth Cadres” would resolve this. i found it a strange analogue only could compare to scientology?

The LaRouchies still leave a faint bitter taste in my mouth because one of the most all-around unpleasant political conversations I’ve ever had was with one of their evangelists at a table in front of Reading Terminal Market in 2007. She was a sneering asshole bc I disagreed.
