Some historic context to go with this:  Harding ran to Alaska in large part to escape the drudgeries of the Presidency, as well reportedly asked covertly private persons (including one Herbert Hoover, I believe) what he was supposed to do about the looming scandals in his administration.  He also had decided not to run for a second term, and was picking up Gifford Pinchot and others for a post-presidency trip around the world, ala President Grant.
